I ran out of gas last week and since then my 73 will not stay running. It will idle for about 20 seconds perfectly then it will just stall out, if I step on the gas it will still run but it doesn't sound like its running right. I have put in a fuel filter because it didn't have one before, I also cleaned the carb, does anybody have any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Sounds like your fuel system may still be blocked. You may have to blow out the lines with compressed air.

I drove it about 10 miles, it ran a little rough then ended up having to tow it home.

sounds like fuel delivery. id check the obvious. plenty of fuel gettign to the carb?? Could have killed the pump?? Like has been suggested blow out the lines, could be something floating around the tank got stuck to the end of the pick up.
start feedin a little more info and we can help narrow it down,
Also, where are you located?

check to see if both injectors are firing. (you should see fuel coming from both of them) If you sucked the tank dry, and something got past the filter somehow, you may have a clogged injector. They'll run like that, but not well and when you throttle it up, she'll lean out and not want to rev up.

oh duh..... carbuerated. sorry, i'm tired.
You may have gotten some crap up IN the carb. Is there fuel dripping from the venturi's when its idling? does it stay running if you throttle it, or still die? You probably have something that got sucked up onto the pickup tube in the tank and its restricting fuel flow. Does it start right back up after it has stalled, or does it have to sit, then start and dies after 20 second? quadrajet, or holley?

when it dies it does have to sit for a few minutes before start up, then dies after 20 seconds. if im on the gas it will stay running. edelbrock carb. when i push the throttle under the hood i can see fuel shooting out.
Im in Ladera Ranch

well i just took off all the fuel lines and nothing was blocked, the only one i couldnt get off was the one from the fuel pump to the filter, which looks like it has a little kink in it. i think based on advice ive recieved it has to be a blocked pick up tube, unless there is something wrong in the carb. just to let you guys know i know nothing about carbs.

when it stalls there is about an 1/8 of an inch of fuel sitting in the carb

Could be a vacuum leak, don't know why it would have just shown up, but the symptoms fit. Do you know how to test for a vacuum leak?

its either that or some crap got inside of the carb and is getting sucked up into the idle ports for the fuel. when you step on the throttle you are allowing extra fuel to flow into it, so it stays running.
